This one will stop you in your tracks! Now, maybe I’m just a bit biased based on our relationship with this artist. And then there’s his track record of two very critically acclaimed albums and some of the most rabid concert fans anywhere. There’s all that. But when you get right down to it, it’s his ability to craft a great song that makes [lastfm link_type=""]Eric Church [/lastfm]special. And today’s feature truly is a GREAT song.
This is a familiar and universal theme with a very modern and emotional treatment. you know the story: boy grows up (probably in a podunk town) full of himself, bucks up against the old man, runs off to do it his way. He finds that his way usually leads to a struggle between his pride and yearning for reconciliation–and home. Does he give in before it’s too late?
Church, who has an uncanny ability to make a song jump out at you with its arrangement and instrumentation, certainly brings the point home with the new single. He uses texture masterfully to support the song’s emotional journey to an empassioned plea that you leaves you in chills…all with just a simple play on words.
