Many country fans are still bitter about the comments that Dixie Chicks lead singer Natalie Maines made back in 2003 about then-president George W. Bush.

Those same fans probably won’t be any happier to hear what she had to say about their musical genre of choice during a Bruce Springsteen tribute in L.A. this past weekend.

CMT host Katie Cook asked Natalie how she was feeling about country music these days, noting that many country fans still adore her.

Maines didn’t quite see it that way. “You still love me,” she replied. “Lots of people don’t love me. You know what? It’s kind of like going back to your abusive husband. I’m just not feeling it. I’m sorry.”

The conversation took place on the red carpet for the MusiCares concert honoring to Bruce Springsteen on Friday, Feb. 8. Natalie was one of many performers who paid tribute to Springsteen that night. She, Ben Harper, and Charlie Musselwhite performed his song “Atlantic City.” Other performers included Tim McGraw and Faith Hill, Zac Brown, Neil Young, Elton John, and Mumford & Sons. The show was hosted by Jon Stewart.

Natalie Maines will release her first solo album on May 7, titled Mother. But where her Dixie Chicks audience was mostly country, this release is aimed squarely at rock audiences.
